Moved on into
independent living
"The One Church House transformed me from being utterly depressed and almost stagnating to giving me direction and purpose, restoring a sense of confidence in myself. The time and effort people put in to help me was astounding, but most of all the support and love you managed to create around me was invaluable and transformative."
Resident, One Church

At One Church Gloucester we are committed to being a Christian community that serves; we care about the issues our city faces and want to be part of the solution. Trained volunteers spend time each month working in a variety of community settings to make a difference. We are an exciting, enthusiastic and welcoming group based in Gloucester. Each expression adapts to its unique geography but contains the flavour and culture of One Church. Our belief is that church is relevant to both our community and the lives of every individual.

Achieved to date

Our first house is receiving guests and we are learning how to serve them well and also challenge them to maintain life in recovery

Why we do this

We've felt God giving us a heart for vulnerable people for some time, and have seen many who are in recovery connecting in to the church. We want to offer the opportunity for women facing crises and challenges such as addictions, domestic abuse, probation etc. being able to turn their lives around, with support from our volunteers. There's no faith requirement to be a resident, but for those that want it, they can explore their faith through various activities at the church.

Future Plans

In the long term, we would love to provide more supported housing which helps homeless people and those in addictions to receive full time support to help them overcome their challenges, become integrated into the church family, and to experience rehabilitation leading to independent living. One Church would like to be a part of the solution in ending homelessness in Gloucester.

green pastures review

Iain and Andrea’s vision did not become a reality over-night, but their patience and persistence brought their lovely house into being. They have prayerfully and thoughtfully considered the women who they can realistically support and set out clear criteria for their referral partners. They have faced the disappointment of having residents leave with dignity and a sense that God has been at work changing lives for the better, even if the results are not tangible. We love the way the church are supporting their vision. Anne is really committed to the residents and they clearly respond to her love for them and the belief she has in them. It has been a real blessing to pray with the team to surround the project with prayer resulting in the faith goals for the house. We love the programme intended to provide meaningful activity for the residents so they can address any underlying issues and prepare for independent living.
